Where does £1 today = £230m tomorrow?

October 9th, 2008

Zimbabwe can't keep out of the news, can it? See Zimbabwe inflation hits new high. I tried explaining to my nine and thirteen year old what 231,000,000% inflation means in real life. Here is where I started. If you have £230 million today, in a year it will buy the same items you can buy with today with $1! Not that didn't work - so I tried the other option. A sweet that costs £1 today will cost £230 million in a year's time. Now I may not be entirely correct, but you can cut it whichever you want - there is a description for the situation that you would want to say to anyone under the age of 21!

And of course, those who can change this situation care! Three weeks of farting around and still no Government of any sort. What exactly is this? I said a couple of days ago, this agreement is a recipe for disaster and so far I am so hoping somebody will say I was wrong. Please?

Now, apparently there was a underground document circulated which after the 'deal' had the basis of the new government. Well apparently, Zanu-PF was holding onto the Ministries that are likely to attract international aid - energy, water, rural development, resettlement etc. The sorry MDC bunch was going to get Women's Affairs, Sports, Culture etc, etc - you get the drift. Guess who will in a good position, come the next election if that happens? The only thing that threw me was Home Affairs. The same policemen who were kicking MDC heads a few months ago are now expected to take orders from those same people. Forgive for being cynical, but I don't think so.

Like I said before, I don't care who heals the wounds, someone do something! The pain of Zimbabwe continues......
